Device & Settings Guide
This guide covers device naming, trusted peers, transfer folders, and privacy options in vLanIO.
Device Identity
Display Name
Your device name is shown to others on the LAN:
- Settings → General → Device name
- Use a clear label (
Alice-MacBook,Office-PC-03) - Changes apply on next discovery broadcast
Platform Info
vLanIO shows OS and app version to help confirm you are connecting to the right machine.
Trusted Devices
Mark frequent partners as trusted to streamline transfers.
Add or remove trust
- Open Settings → Devices
- Select a peer → Trust or Remove
- Trusted devices may skip repeated accept prompts (depending on your security preset)
When to revoke trust
- Device sold or repurposed
- Unknown name appears on your network
- Employee offboarding in an office environment
Transfer Folders
Default save location
Set where incoming files land:
- Settings → Transfers → Save to
- Choose an existing folder or create a new one
- Ensure sufficient disk space for large packages
Send behavior
- Default source folder for file picker
- Option to open destination folder after completion
Privacy & Security
vLanIO does not route file content through the cloud. Still, configure local preferences:
Auto-accept
- Off (recommended): confirm each incoming transfer
- Trusted only: auto-accept from trusted peers
- Never enable auto-accept on public or shared networks
Discovery
- Toggle visibility if you only want to send (not receive discovery)
- Restart the app after changing network interfaces (Wi‑Fi ↔ Ethernet)
Local firewall
Allow vLanIO through OS firewall prompts on first launch. Blocked ports prevent peers from connecting.
Notifications
Customize alerts:
- Transfer completed / failed
- New device discovered
- Update available
Reset Settings
To restore defaults:
- Settings → Advanced → Reset
- Confirm — trusted device list and folder paths reset
- Restart vLanIO
